This instrument is a hydrometer, made by Mr. Syke, No. 21 Poultry, London England. It measures the specific gravity of liquids by the use of the float and weights and thermometer to measure the temperature of the liquid in question. (Not only can the identity of an unknown liquid be determined by this instrument but purity can be tested). Syke made quite a few of these instruments and I have had my share of them. This one is complete, has all the weights and the thermometer. On the lid the ivory plaque indicates at this time Syke was maker to the Revenue of the United Kingdom.
