Sugar Nippers, sku # 97111

19th century sugar nipper.

$275.00

Sugar nippers came into use during the 18th century and were popular well into the mid 19th century. They were used to chip sugar from the hard cone-shaped loafs that sugar was made into in that time.  In the kitchen, the nipper was braced against the table for leverage when nipping the hard sugar, hence the guard to protect the fingers from being smashed. In the south, sugar was valuable enough that special sugar chests were constructed to hold it. They were kept in the dining room or other fine room and so were fine pieces of furniture themselves. Any sugar chest should also have a nipper. This sugar nipper is 10″ by 3.25″ by 0.5″ and weighs 12.2 ozs.
